Coloring your White RS Wheels

but you can easily dye them to any color.
PLEASE USE CAUTION WHEN DYING YOUR PINEWOOD DERBY CAR WHEELS. YOU WILL BE WORKING WITH BOILING WATER … ADULT SUPERVISION IS REQUIRED.
Set up a work area near a sink with water. You should also have easy access to a microwave or stove top. Cover all work areas with several layers of newspaper or old heavy towels to prevent staining in case of an accident.
You will need:
- Dyes can be found at your supermarket in many colors. We use the Rit brand powder dyes. Custom colors can be obtained by blending different colors together. See our custom color chart below for additional ideas.
- A microwaveable or stove top dish or pan (non-porous). We use a 4 cup glass Pyrex mixing cup.
- Mild dish soap.
- Paper towels or old rags for clean-up.
The Process:
- Wash the wheels with mild dish soap and warm water and set aside.
- Boil 1 cup of water in the microwave or on a stove top, use caution when handling.
- Stir in 2 teaspoons of desired color dye. Use ratios from chart to custom blend using no more than 3 teaspoons total of all dyes. Observe blended color in a metal spoon and adjust if needed to desired color.
- Re-heat mixture of water and dye (1 min. max in microwave) do not boil over!!
- Add wheels to HOT mixture for 15 min. stirring and checking in 5 min. intervals. Leave in mixture until desired color is achieved.
- At this time the mixture should be cooled down to a point that is easier to handle, pour mixture down sink drain and rinse wheels and bowl with cool water. Caution: Do not splash any excess; it can stain clothing, carpeting or even porous counter tops.
Special Notes:
1 Most colors dye VERY well, lighter shades may require 2 times for best results.
2 If all else fails and you do not get your desired color, dye them BLACK.
3 Spotting can occur if the wheels are not washed thoroughly.
4 Blend your dye well to prevent clumps and dark spots on the wheels.
5 Be creative!!!!!! The colors possibilities are endless.
