The wheels that come in your kit have imperfections that prevent your car from going as fast as it could. We offer a variety of prepared wheels with these imperfections removed. Check the details for each wheel to see which are legal in your race.

All of our speed products now have a "Speed Rating". The number in the red arrow is the number of inches that were gained at the finish line by using this product on our test track. Our test track is only 28 feet long so you can expect a larger gain on typical 32' to 45' tracks. You can use this number to compare the relative speed advantages of our various products.

Matched Pinewood Derby Wheels

16 different molds are used to make BSA wheels. Wheel characteristics vary
from one mold to the other. Mismatched wheels may not work well with each other.
All of our prepared wheels are matched to the same mold.

Graphite Coated Matched Pinewood Derby Wheels

These wheels are the same as our Matched Wheels with the addition that graphite has been added to the four friction areas shown to the left. Our special process coats these areas with an even layer of high grade graphite. The graphite is bonded to the wheel so it will last many races. Our tests have shown no reduction in speed after more than 20 races! The areas of the wheel coated with graphite have a dark gray color that is close to but does not match the color of the wheel.

Lightly Sanded and Matched Pinewood Derby Wheels

These wheels are:

The tread area is sanded just enough to remove the high areas and make the wheel rounder.Some of the original surface remains. Tread marks are clearly visible.
Wheel diameter is greater than 1.18".
Step is removed from outer hub and the hub is domed to reduce friction.
All four wheels are from the same mold to match characteristics and improve performance.

This official BSA wheel has been treated and machined so all dimensions are perfect and ready to race. All of the lettering and numbering inside has not been touched so these wheels will meet many Pack, District and Council Rules. In addition to all of the modifications of our lathed wheels, the hub is reamed straight and the inside of this wheel is totally re-worked with special tooling for the most possible weight removal but still retaining durability. This wheel is machined within a .0005” tolerance and only weighs 1.8 gram.

Small Diameter Axle "RSN" Wheels

RS Pinewood Derby Wheel

Very similar to our RS Wheel but this wheel uses a needle axle (included) with a .035” diameter. Set-up and alignment is tricky but you can expect to see up to .0250 sec. increase over the standard “RS” wheel when aligned correctly. We recommend this wheel for experienced builders due to the small axle size and the small drill bits used (you will need to use a drill press to drill the axle holes). NyOil or other liquid lubricants are recommended for this wheel.

This plastic fin replaces one of your car's front wheels, increasing the speed of your car. The fin can be mounted over the axle slot but performance will improve if it is mounted as far forward as possible. A #50 or 1/16" drill is required.

Just thought I would send yall some info. about the product I ordered. I bought a set of Pro Ultra Lite BSA Wheel's and some graphite covered bsa axles. Everything worked wonderful. I only had one problem which was actually my fault. while putting on the final wheel axle set my hand slipped and dented the wheel and cracked it slightly. Your product is so good though that my son still ended up with first place(den), grand champion(pack), and third overall out of two cub scout packs and one girl scout pack. I have enclosed a pic also of him holding his two trophies... Jonathan C.

Taylor Grace won 1st place in her age division by a full second and a half! When she competed against the winners of each class she got 3rd place, but statistically she was also a 1st place winner. That is to say the statistical variation between each track (0.05seconds) was greater than the time difference between her car and the 2nd and 1st place finishers. We had a great time. We'll order some more wheels next year, thanks so much for all your help! ,,,Todd J

Tiger Cub Spencer crowned GRAND CHAMPION!
Spencer lost 1st round (agh!) but won the remaining 5 rounds. Then the top 3
Tiger Cubs raced for the championship as the Boy Scouts / Weblo's were kept
seperate. Spencer took the championship!

Hi there...I just wanted to tell you...I was very sceptical when I was thinking of buying parts for our pinewood derby car. So I bought the lathed wheels and grooved axles, and some car parts. We took 1st place on 1/31/10 in our pinewood derby! You have to understand, our den masters sons have done it for years, 8 I believe. He was undefeated each year. This year, we beat him! And I truly believe it was with having these parts. I had the car weighing exactly 5 ounces. My sons car had the record time at 3.97 seconds. The only car that could even sort of get close to his was this den masters sons car, and still , it was about a good 6 inches away. He even said "WOW! That car smokes!".
