Most pinewood derby rules limit the length of the car to 7" so don't add any LEGO pieces that extend past the front or back of the block.

You can add LEGO pieces that make your car wider but the width should not exceed 2 3/4 inches.

As a general rule, the height of your car should not be greater than 3 inches.

Stock Wheels and Axles

If you are holding your own races then these wheels and axles are an economical alternative to the official pinewood derby wheels and axles. They are the same dimensions as the official BSA wheels and axles but these high quality components don't require as much preparation. Just file the crimp marks off of the axle head and you are all set. If you need official BSA wheels, they are available here.

(4 wheels and axles per set)

LEGO Car Paints

The car block should be painted before you add the LEGO pieces. You can use a color that matches the color theme of the LEGO pieces that you will be using or use a neutral color like white, gray or black. You can paint the side of the LEGO plate but do not paint the top. You can mask the top by covering the top with old LEGO pieces. Remove the old pieces before the paint dries.

LEGO Car Weights

Weight pocket
A LEGO pinewood derby car will need about 2 oz of additional weight to bring the car up to the 5 oz limit. An easy way to add weight is to create a pocket near the rear of the car with the LEGO pieces then fill the pocket with weights. Cover the pocket with more LEGO pieces.  You can also add weights to the bottom of the block.
