Step 1 - Blocks and wheels
Skip this step if you already have blocks and wheels.

Wheels and axles are high quality but they are not the official BSA parts.

It is a good idea to have a few extra sets to replace lost or broken parts.

Block is the standard 1 3/4 X 1 1/4 X 7" dimension.

Each block has slots cut and holes drilled next to the slots. Either can be used for the axles but we recommend the holes.

Wheels and axles are ready to race. Axles could benefit from a little polishing.

Glue is needed to secure axles in the slots. Glue is not required if the axle holes are used.

Step 2 - Lubricant
A lubricant is optional but recommended. The cars will go much faster.
If one car uses a lubricant, all cars should use the same lubricant.

Step 3 - Weights
Weight makes the cars go faster so they should all weigh close to the same. We recommend a weight limit of 4 or 5 oz.
If all cars have a similar design then weights may not be needed.

Wood Rasps Rasps are used to shape the block after it has been cut with a saw. Rasps are also great for rounding sharp corners and cutting groves into the wood. Rasps have rough teeth that can quickly remove a lot of wood. After you use a rasp, a file or sandpaper can be used to smooth the block.

Down and Derby is a fun family comedy about a cub scout Pinewood Derby race that turns an average group of dads into an awkward bunch of competitors.

Step 9 - Track

Your track should be at least 30 feet long. The number of lanes will be dependent on the number of racers participating in the event. Two lanes is fine for up to 20 racers. 4 lanes will accommodate up to 40 racers and so on.

You can buy a track or make your own. You can do a search on Google for "pinewood derby track" to find several suppliers of tracks and timers and for instructions on how to build your own track. Commercial tracks will cost about $800 including a starting gate and timer. You can connect most timers to a computer to control the race. Our Practice Track does not include all of the bells and whistles that the other tracks offer but it would be fine for smaller races and would cost $113.70 for a two lane 30' track..

By far, the easiest way to run a race is with race management software loaded onto a laptop. Most timers have software available as an option. Our Grand Prix Race Management software can be used with or without a electronic timer (compatible with most timers).
