Example of pinewood car derby

Add weight close to the back of your car for extra speed.

Before inserting the axles into your car, put a small drop of wood/paper glue in the slot about 1/4 inch from each side. This will help to prevent the axles from falling out during the race. Do not use super glue. You might not be able to remove the axles if you need to.

Our graphite coated wheels and axles should be broken in before the race. After the wheels and axles are on your car, push the car forward on a flat surface about 30ft. Do not spin the wheels excessively in the air.

If you are installing the weights the same day as the race, use melted candle wax or hot glue gun instead of wood putty to seal the weight hole. Candle wix will dry in a few minutes, wood putty takes several hours.

Apply a coat of clear paint on the car after adding the racing stripes. The clear paint will protect the stripes and give the car an extra gloss finish.

It is easier to glue accessories to your pinewood derby car if you sand the car smooth before painting it.

Our paint does not need a primer. Sand your car then give it one coat of paint. After the paint has dried, give it a light sanding until the car feels smooth. Then give it two more coats without sanding.

These official BSA wheesl have been treated and machined so all dimensions are perfect and ready to race. In addition to all of the modifications of our lathed wheels, the hub is reamed straight and plastic is removed from the inside of these wheels for the most possible weight removal but still retaining durability. These wheels are machined within a .0005” tolerance.

Light wheels are faster because less energy is required to spin them.

Pro Inertia Lite BSA wheels

All of the lettering and numbering inside has not been touched so these wheels will meet many Pack, District and Council Rules.This wheel only weighs 1.8 gram.

This steel weight is designed to be attached to the bottom of your car.  It is less than 1/16" thick so won't interfere with the 3/8" minimum clearance specified in most rules. The weight can be adjusted in .02 oz increments by breaking off segments with pliers.

The axles that come with your car kit are NAILS! They are not straight and this is why we created the Pro-Axle Press. All you need is a hammer and the Pro-Axle Press to straighten and make the shaft round and square and taper the head of the axle.   2. Step cut allows for reverse mounting of the wheel (for polishing the inner edge.
  3. Easy to grip screw does not require tools to mount the wheels.
